Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention is a 1985 album by Frank Zappa. The album was originally released in two slightly different versions in the US and Europe. The album's title is a reference to the lobby group, the PMRC, who were campaigning to require record companies to put warning stickers on albums they considered offensive, and to Zappa's former band, the Mothers of Invention.

Now billed as the Velvet Underground with Nico, Warhol incorporated the band into a series of multimedia performances dubbed the Exploding Plastic Inevitable: a marriage of underground music, film, dance and lights. The band believed that Zappa used his clout to hold back their release in favor of his own album with the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out. The problem Frank Zappa and his manager, Herb Cohen, said Morrison. They sabotaged us in a number of ways, because they wanted to be the first with a freak release. And we were totally naive.

Frank Zappa was one of rock's true oddballs, innovators and all-around contradictory guys. He made freak-out music but didn't take drugs. He turned out tons of music every year but had little interest in being a star. Their early albums were pointed, political affairs that also skewed pop culture and the mainstream that was consuming American youth. He made a couple movies, turned out solo albums that ranged from instrumental works to full-on rock operas and explored music from jazz and classical to pop and prog. He died of cancer at the age of 52 in 1993. It featured tracks from albums by Frank Zappa, The Mothers of Invention, Wild Man Fischer, The GTOs, Tim Buckley, Tim Dawe, Jeff Simmons, Lord Buckley, Alice Cooper, and the redoubtable Captain Beefheart. 1970-03-07) For Sharleena (Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles).

Under Zappa's helm, it was signed to jazz label Verve Records as part of the label's diversification plans. Verve released the Mothers of Invention's début double album Freak Out! in 1966, featuring a lineup including Zappa, Collins, Black, Estrada and Elliot Ingber. Don Preston joined the band soon after. The Velvet Underground's landmark The Velvet Underground & Nico dropped March 12, 1967, followed quickly by The Grateful Dead's self-titled debut on March 17, 1967. Of all cult bands in history, no two have had a greater immediate and lasting impact on the direction of rock music. When Jefferson Airplane and the Beatles experimented, they kept one foot firmly in the pop world. The Dead and the Velvets, however, didn't seem to care about American Bandstand or the Billboard charts. One could argue Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention - whose Freak Out! album simultaneously deconstructed rock while expanding its horizons in the summer of 1966 - did the same thing nearly one year before either band's debut LP. But while Zappa opened doors for rock, his insular sonic palette didn't invite listeners to follow him - much less start a band of their own.

Weird German compilation, haphazardly thrown together to say the least. Someone must have just stuck a pin in the discographies of each band to come up with the tracklisting (unless some kind of subtle conceptual genius was at work and I've completely missed the point). Kicking off the Velvets disc with The Murder Mystery - yeah, that'll work! The Mothers disc is the type of thing that drove Zappa mad - taking a load of tracks completely out of context from his early concept type albums. The Velvet Underground are billed as 'featuring Nico' - yet, as noted, there are no songs from the first album they did together. This is one strange beast to be sure. And as for that cheapo sleeve design .... ye gods.Polydor/ Verve and MGM had no faith in the longevity of the music they issued by two of the greatest bands of the '60s so they heavily milked their back catalogues, quickly and clumsily, before they considered the kids would lose interest. The person who compiled this album obviously knew nothing and cared even less about the music.Despite this - I would love a copy of this compilation. Truly a thing of wonder.
