The Mothers of Invention was an American rock band from California. Formed in 1964, their work is marked by the use of sonic experimentation, innovative album art, and elaborate live shows. Originally an R&B band called the Soul Giants, the band's first lineup included Ray Collins, David Coronado, Ray Hunt, Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black. Frank Zappa was asked to take over as the guitarist following a fight between Collins and Coronado, the band's original saxophonist/leader.

Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention is a 1985 album by Frank Zappa. The album was originally released in two slightly different versions in the US and Europe. The album's title is a reference to the lobby group, the PMRC, who were campaigning to require record companies to put warning stickers on albums they considered offensive, and to Zappa's former band, the Mothers of Invention.

Frank Zappa 's liner notes for Freak Out! name-checked an enormous breadth of musical and intellectual influences, and he seemingly attempts to cover them all on the second Mothers of Invention album, Absolutely Free.

There are a few excellent jazz-rock instrumentals here, which again show Zappa's sense of complexity, and "Porn Wars" is one of the album's definite highlights. However, tracks such as "Yo Cats" and "We're Turning Again" never appealed too much for me, and the synclavier stuff are good but nothing truly fascinating.

The Zappa Motherlode: 12 albums reissued this month and 48 more by the end of the year. He established a musical category of his own – ‘Zappa’, his former keyboardist George Duke once remarked. The Mothers start banging on drumkits, conversing in high-pitched Latino gibberish and fixating on the words creamcheese and America is wonderful. On Absolutely Free, the comedy gets even darker. It’s an album that takes the almighty piss out of Sgt. Pepper and yet, strangely, begs to be heard alongside it and judged as no less historic and important.

The recording debut of the Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention is a brilliantly wicked counter-strike to the flower power sensibilities prevalent at the time of it's release in 1966.
