Zappa and the Mothers of Invention returned to Los Angeles in mid-1968, and the Zappas moved into a house on Laurel Canyon Boulevard, only to move again to one on Woodrow Wilson Drive. 178 This was Zappa's home for the rest of his life. After he disbanded the Mothers of Invention, Zappa released the acclaimed solo album Hot Rats (1969). 194 It features, for the first time on record, Zappa playing extended guitar solos and contains one of his most enduring compositions, "Peaches en Regalia", which reappeared several times on future recordings. In 1970 Zappa met conductor Zubin Mehta. They arranged a May 1970 concert where Mehta conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic augmented by a rock band. According to Zappa, the music was mostly written in motel rooms while on tour with the Mothers of Invention.
The 2013 200 Motels (The Suites) performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Master Chorale was a special evening – and some might even say it was predestined. Written and produced by Frank Zappa to accompany his 200 Motels feature film, portions of the score were premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta conducting in May 1970 at UCLA (a performance the Los Angeles Times’ then music and dance critic Martin Bernheimer called an unsettling evening ), before the kaleidoscopic film and double LP soundtrack’s release in. 1971. 200 Motels is a 1971 American-British musical surrealist film cowritten and directed by Frank Zappa and Tony Palmer and starring The Mothers of Invention, Theodore Bikel and Ringo Starr. A soundtrack album was released in the same year, with a slightly different selection of music.
The complete orchestral version of Frank Zappa's "200 Motels" will receive its world premiere on Oct. 23 at Walt Disney Concert Hall as the Los Angeles Philharmonic begins its 10th anniversary season in the venue. Conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct. Written mostly in motel rooms while Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were on tour, portions of the piece received a premiere in May 1970 at UCLA's Royce Hall with Zubin Mehta conducting the . Portions of the score were used in Zappa's film of the same name. 29 at the Royal Festival Hall with Jurjen Hempel conducting.
You couldn't call it a classical orchestra version of a rock work, for the original film soundtrack of Frank Zappa's 1971 film 200 Motels also contained a substantial orchestral component, performed originally by no less than the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The film was intended as a kind of rock opera about a touring band (that's the title's reference). Filming was abandoned partway through, and the music was issued as an album that made some sense of a rather random story.
