Album · 2013 · 1 Song. Barefoot Boy Larry Coryell.
Barefoot Boy is Larry Coryell's first and only studio album for the Flying Dutchman label, a company created by Impulse! Records founder Bob Thiele. The album was produced by Thiele with assistance from Lillian Seyfert and engineered by Eddie Kramer. Barefoot Boy was recorded at Electric Ladyland, New York, United States. Larry Coryell – guitar. Steve Marcus – saxophone. Mervin Bronson – bass. Lawrence Killian – conga. Harry Wilkinson – percussion.
When it's his turn to solo on this opening number, Coryell turns up the heat, sounding like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Sonny Sharrock. Coryell played with Sharrock on Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground. "The Great Escape" finds Coryell cooking over a bass and percussion groove, with Marcus on tenor sax. "Call to the Higher Consciousness" is a side-long 20-minute jam in which all the players take a ride, with Marcus once again cooking on the soprano sax. Roy Haynes is superb throughout, working in tandem with the percussionists to keep the music moving.
Guitarist Larry Coryell recorded only one album for Flying Dutchman. Coryell got to know label owner Bob Thiele when he moved to New York in 1965. Thiele was running Impulse Records and Coryell played in Chico Hamilton’s group on their Impulse album The Dealer. His final album for Vanguard established the style that would place him at the forefront of jazz throughout the 70s. In between his Vanguard releases, he recorded the Barefoot Boy album for Flying Dutchman. It was an off-the-cuff affair cut at New York’s Electric Ladyland Studio. The opener ‘Gypsy Queen’ features Roy Haynes on drums and two percussionists, with Coryell and saxophonist Steve Marcus soloing over the track. The Great Escape’ is a funky, filmic number that allows Coryell to display his full range of bluesy licks.

Probably Larry Coryell's most important album outside the Eleventh House efforts, Barefoot Boy is the first truly jazz-rock album of his. Although LC took the Village Gate line-up of Bronson and Wilkinson, he future regular collabs Steve Markus (sax) and his old school friend Mike Mandel (KB) to make a sensational line-up that will make the next few albums' basis
Barefoot Boy Larry Coryell. This album has an average beat per minute of 124 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 106/143 BPM). Tracklist Barefoot Boy.
