Larry Coryell has made a number of acoustic recordings prior to this disc. Badi Assad's three previous CDs for Chesky have all merited high praise. Assad contributed five compositions to the session, though the stunning opener, "Seu Jorge e Dona Ica," is hard to beat. She initially accompanies her fellow guitarists on a percussive instrument called a kalimba, which sounds like it originates from Africa. Assad's body percussion introduces Abercrombie's challenging "Descending Grace," a piece full of surprising twists. His "Ralph's Piano Waltz" is every bit as difficult, but the players seem to tackle it effortlessly. Coryell also brought several of his pieces to the sessions. New Lute Prelude" was inspired by the late Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, it serves as a brief introduction to the much more laid-back "New Lute Interlude. He also composed two duets to play with Assad.

Assad : Three Guitars Hybrid SACD - DSD Chesky Records 2005. Most of Larry's recent albums that I have tend to be straight ahead jazz, rather than jazz rock/fusion. Nothing wrong with that, but I suspect the Three Guitars DVD and CD would be of more interest to the average progressive music fan. The music is still heavily jazzy, but you can't beat having two Abercrombie classics - Ralph's Piano Waltz and Timeless performed live. John Abercrombie is all over my record collection, but Badi Assad is new to me. She's a lot of fun to watch live and I didn't realize what a "freak" she was until I saw her in action.

The new Chesky release Three Guitars, combining jazz guitarists Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie with the Brazilian ocalist/body percussionist (really!) and all-around phenomenon Badi Assad, is thankfully one of those rare records from which the loveliness of the music is absorbed long before any brilliance in the playing is recognized. But the three guitarists mostly avoid this trap through clever arrangements, which feature Coryell's and Abercrombie's steel strings forming interlocking patterns with each other and with Assad's nylon string guitar. Coryell apparently worked with Assad in preparation for the session, and it shows: the continual melodic inventiveness and contrast between the guitarists' sounds and styles elevates the album above its peers in the genre.
