The title track won the Best Rock Performance and the Best Rock Song categories and the album won the Best Alternative Music Album, the Best Recording Package as well as the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical categories. The versions of "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)" and "Tis A Pity She Was A Whore" on ★ are totally different recordings to that of the single David Bowie - Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) which was released in late 2014.

Blackstar (stylised as ★) is the twenty-fifth and final studio album by English musician David Bowie. It was released worldwide through ISO, RCA, Columbia, and Sony on 8 January 2016, coinciding with Bowie's 69th birthday. The album was largely recorded in secret between The Magic Shop and Human Worldwide Studios in New York City with Bowie's longtime co-producer Tony Visconti and a group of local jazz musicians.

David Gilmour - Shine On You Crazy Diamond feat.

David Bowie & Tony Visconti are the producers of the album, and it features percussion (performed by James Murphy). Visconti stated that he and Bowie listened to a lot of Kendrick Lamar, specifically his second LP, To Pimp a Butterfly while working on the album. He told Rolling Stone: We wound up with nothing like that, but we loved the fact that Kendrick was so open-minded and he didn’t do a straight-up hip-hop record. On the 10th of January, (only 2 days after the album was released), the legend himself, David Bowie died at the age of 69 in Manhattan, New York after battling cancer in secret for 18 months. Since we were presented with the sad news of his unfortunate death, several have looked deeper into the album and noticed that Blackstar explores the theme of mortality. Several celebrities around the world have paid tribute to the legendary Ziggy Stardust.

In coming to see David Bowie the man finally portrayed by David Bowie the artist, he not only affirms our natural human hopes and fears, but realizes his own in his final hours. The artist lowers his mask and takes a bow. And the audience applauds.

It's difficult to separate 2016's Blackstar from The Next Day, the album David Bowie released with little warning in 2013. Arriving after a ten-year drought, The Next Day pulsated with the shock of the new – as Bowie's first album of new material in a decade, how could it not? – but ultimately it was grounded in history, something its cover made plain in its remix of Heroes artwork

When David Bowie returned from a 10-year hiatus with 2013’s The Next Day, he could have sanded down the edges of one of the longest and most enigmatic careers in pop history. For a while, it almost seemed like that was what he was doing. The Next Day ruthlessly cannibalized his past, pooling styles and gestures from classic Bowie albums into a solidly mid-tempo simmer. He rehashed the cover of Heroes and stamped an ugly white square over his face with The Next Day printed in anemic sans serif in the middle.
