Since David Bowie spent the '90s jumping from style to style, it comes as a shock that Hours, his final album of the decade, is a relatively straightforward affair. Not only that, but it feels unlike anything else in his catalog. Bowie's music has always been a product of artifice, intelligence, and synthesis. Hours is a relaxed, natural departure from this method. Arriving after two labored albums, the shift in tone is quite refreshing. Thursday's Child," the album's engaging mid-tempo opener, is a good indication of what lays ahead.

At this point, David Bowie has done more harm than good to his fans' cochleas. His last few albums have failed in almost every aspect, but not for a lack of trying. Outside, his 1995 "comeback," was a concept album about a futuristic murder case that featured an endless stream of clichés and banal S&M; imagery in lieu of lyrics. His 1997 follow-up, Earthling, attempted mock drum-n-bass, some shoddy reggae- tinged numbers, and a universally- panned tour with Trent Reznor. Hours, of course, completes Bowie's late 90's trilogy in his usual fashion- he's altered.

this is the record where bowie gave up trying to do something creative and made an attempt to return to a "classic sound". he would do this twice more before he stopped releasing records altogether. as is generally the case with the "return to the classic sound" record, this falls flat through large portions of it's running time. however, there are a few enjoyable moments scattered throughout the disc.on the one hand, it's hard to blame him for turtling. the records preceding this one were nearly universally panned as either unlistenable excursions into pointless artistic posturing or sad attempts to appeal to people half his age, as though young people aren't allowed to have any appreciation for older musicians or older musicians are for some reason required to only appeal to older people. this idea seems to be rooted in a warped concept of rock music as something that is generational, and the boomers themselves are largely to blame for this as they set the whole thing up that way, but it's a juvenile approach to listening to music that negates the music itself and reduces the artform to a social trick for shallow idiots. believe it or not, i didn't buy this bowie record to make friends or attract members of the opposite sex, i bought it because i was hoping that i'd enjoy listening to it.on the other hand, the disc lacks the sense of adventure that is required for a bowie disc to function properly. if i wanted watered down pop, i'd have bought something other than a bowie disc.now, it's not a straight return to his glory days. bowie has spliced various pieces of his 70s sound - mostly the fripp, eno and ronson years - with an "adult contemporary" feel, likely in an attempt to not just move backwards but to recapture the same audience that was listening to his discs in 1979 and were then twenty years older than they were in 1979. tracks like something in the air, with it's ronsonesque guitars and shimmering textures, manage to pull this off well but others like thursday's child come off as trite and generic. still others, like seven, sound like grandpa singing around the campfire at christmas.my dad loves this disc; while i'm the one that initially purchased it, i had to borrow it from him to review it. he loves the musical and lyrical references to the mid 70s. he loves answering the question "who said time is on my side?", which i wouldn't have been able to answer without his help; the answer is mick jagger. while the young may not understand these masturbatory, nostalgic exercises down memory lane, the record was not written for them and should not be judged by it's ability to appeal to them. the record must be judged by whether or not it achieves it's goal, which was to reconnect with an increasingly disinterested and aging fan base, and by that standard the disc succeeded, whether i happen to find large amounts of it downright regressive or not.
