The Louvin Brothers were an American country music duo composed of brothers Ira Lonnie Loudermilk (1924–1965) and Charlie Elzer Loudermilk (1927–2011), better known as Ira and Charlie Louvin. They helped popularize close harmony, a genre of country music. The brothers are cousins to John D. Loudermilk, a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member. The brothers adopted the name Louvin Brothers in the 1940s as they began their career in gospel music. Their first foray into secular music was the minor hit "The Get Acquainted Waltz", recorded with Chet Atkins.

Louvin began singing professionally with his brother Ira as a teenager on local radio programs in Chattanooga, Tennessee After Charlie left the act briefly in 1945 to serve in World War II, the brothers moved first to Knoxville and later to Memphis, working as postal clerks by day while making appearances in the evening. Although he readily admitted he was never much of a writer, Louvin released a disc of classics containing one new song, a tribute to Ira, and a gospel album on Tompkins Square Records Produced by Mark Nevers. The songs mainly pair Louvin with other singers, such as George Jones, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Alex McManus of Bright Eyes, Elvis Costello, and Derwin.

On his new solo album, Charlie Louvin, the singer is joined by such younger admirers as Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, George Jones, Tift Merritt, Tom T. Hall, Marty Stuart and Will Oldham. None of them, though, can replace the ghostly voice of Ira. In fact, the most riveting moment on the album comes not on the celebrity-guest remakes of the old songs but on Ira, a new song Charlie sings by himself. When Charlie warbles that the hardest thing he ever faced was losing his brother and singing all alone, the stab of despair in his voice is all the sharper for it being difficult to admit. It was never easy being the younger brother of Ira Louvin, a man of immense pride and little generosity. It was worth it, though, to create that harmony, that sound of two siblings blending so closely that they nearly-but not quite-became one voice.
