Antonin Dvorak: String Quartets Op. 51 & 61. 1990.

The Emerson Quartet claims these string quartets of Dvorák's have always been important to them, but unfortunately their performances don't communicate that significance clearly, writes Andrew Clements. With the exception of the well known F major work Op 96, often known as the American Quartet, these are the last four string quartets that Dvorák completed – the E flat Op 51 and C major Op 61 in 1879 and 1881 respectively, Op 105 (G major) and Op 106 (A flat) in 1895, shortly after he returned from his three years in. New York. It's music the Emerson Quartet claims has always been important to them, but unfortunately their performances don't communicate that significance clearly, let alone the affection it implies.

Antonín Dvořák composed his String Quartet No. 13 in G major, Op. 106, (B. 192), between November 11 and December 9, 1895. 1895 was an eventful year for him: he returned to Europe from America in April, and his sister-in-law (who had been his first love) died in May. Upon finishing No. 13, he took back up his No. 14 (Op. 105) in A-flat major, which he had begun before this quartet and finished it on December 30 of that year.
