The piano trio was a genre that Johannes Brahms was to revisit frequently during his career. While this is not an unusual practice, Brahms utilized different instrumentation at varying points in his output. The first trio is the early (for Brahms) Op. 40 Trio for piano, violin, and horn. The horn trio contains sharply contrasting movements ranging from the joyous, exuberant Finale to the mournful, contemplative Adagio mesto third movement. The C minor Piano Trio, scored for the more common piano, violin, and cello, did not emerge for another 20 years after the horn trio

The members of the Gould Piano Trio - violinist Lucy Gould, cellist Alice Neary, and pianist Benjamin Frith - are manifestly giving their all, as are Robert Plane in the Clarinet Trio and David Pyatt in the Horn Trio. But while their all is considerable, it is not enough. In fast passages, such as the B major Trio's Scherzo or the C minor Trio's Presto, the players cannot quite hold together; they keep the beat, but they skim across the top of the notes

I would also guess that they had looked hard at each one of these trios: not just the familiar five, but the original version of the B major Trio too, and even the ‘Probably Brahms’ A major, composed sometime in the 1850s; when you hear it played with such conviction it’s hard to believe anyone else could have created it. The comprehensiveness of the set is one clear advantage, but even if these discs were issued separately they would still come with strong recommendations.
