The young members of the Doric String Quartet make up just such an ensemble. The playing on this Chandos album offers a fresh, youthful perspective on a set of quartets that all too often come across as stodgy or dull. The musicians achieve this through fast movements that are tossed off at break-neck speeds while maintaining control and musical cohesion. These driven tempo choices set up brilliant contrasts with the more pensive, introspective slow movements.

The three string quartets by Robert Schumann were composed in 1842. They are: String Quartet No. 1, Op. 1 in A minor. 2, Op. 2 in F. 3, Op. 3 in A. The quartets Op. 41 are Schumann's only string quartets, and were composed after studying the quartets of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. He had sketched some ideas for quartets a few years before 1842, but they had been abandoned; in February of that year he considered again writing quartets.

Schumann's set of string quartets, Op. 41, his only published contribution to the genre remain a sheer masterpiece of 19th century chamber music repertoire. Esteemed theorist & composer Moritz Hauptmann said: 'His first, which delighted me immensely, made me marvel at his talen. t is cleverly conceived and held together, and a great deal of it is very beautiful'. The works are performed by the Doric String Quartet, among the most impressive of the young quartets on the classical music scene today. And the outcome is simply undescribable. These young musicians owe expression, driving force and exultant lyricism.

Doric String Quartet (Chandos). With this disc they move into core repertoire: Schumann's three Op 41 (1842) quartets were written in a fury of creativity after prolonged study of Haydn, Mozart and, especially, the late quartets of Beethoven. His influence is heard repeatedly, in the long, serene melody of the No 1 adagio and the dense argument of the opening movement of No 2. But the ardent lyricism is Schumann's alone. He wrote other chamber works but no more quartets. The Dorics play with warmth, finesse and exciting attack.
