Beak (stylized as BEAK ) are an English electronic music band, consisting of Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) with Billy Fuller (Robert Plant) and Will Young (Moon Gangs), who replaced Matt Williams (MXLX, Fairhorns) in 2016. Beak released their self-titled debut album on 16 November 2009. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in Bristol, England.
Beak are a band very much out of time. There was a whole album of bonus tracks released in 2012, a live album with the BBC in 2013, and a series of singles and Eps, notably their split EP with themselves, ‘Beak , which confirms the band over the years have undergone a slow but definite metamorphosis from a group reliant on live jams and in-the-moment creativity into a. unit showing a definite identity, an approach, an ethos.
Beak is a project of Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) with fellow Bristol musicians Billy Fuller (Fuzz Against Junk) and Matt Williams (Team Brick). Their self-titled debut was released in November 2009 on Barrow's own label, Invada Records.
Beak elevate themselves above side project status with the resounding . By Janne Oinonen, 19 September 2018, 07:00 BS. Crafting something approaching an indie hit is quite an accomplishment for a group that was formed to grant Barrow another creative outlet whilst his very famous main project was on one its lengthy hiatuses, and whose murky early work - their debut album was recorded entirely live with no overdubs or fixes - could hardly have been more uncompromisingly experimental in ethos and approach. After two albums and a soundtrack, marks the point where it’s no longer reasonable to discuss Beak as merely a Portishead side project.
