Hélène Grimaud wanted to explore the universal nature of memory, its place in the lives of us all. Memory, she explains, uses music to probe the many levels of human consciousness. Music peels back the layers of time to reveal the essence of experience, she observes. Momentary pain, distress, elation, fades – what remains is sensation. Sensation is the resonance of experience in the space of memory. These miniatures are not weighty structures; rather, they possess what she aptly describes as immaterial qualities. Memory, she says, serves to conjure atmospheres of fragile reflection, a mirage of what was – or what could have been. Her artistry flourished in the sacred space of the Himmelfahrtskirche in Munich’s Sendling district.

Album · 2018 · 15 Songs. French pianist Hélène Grimaud started her career as a musician with a huge technique, capable of taking on some of the warhorses of the repertoire. She’s since moved on to recording solo albums with a story. This release explores music’s relationship to nostalgia and memory. Much of the material is French-by Satie and Debussy-but a trio of modern pieces by Valentin Silvestrov and Nitin Sawhney are woven into the texture, and they make the piano sing in a quite different, stirring way. Memory Hélène Grimaud.

From reveries by Chopin, Debussy and Satie to the timeless melodies of Valentin Silvestrov, Memory invites to contemplation. 6 September ·. Hélène Grimaud enjoying time off before the next tour. Coming this September: The new Helene Grimaud album 'Memory'. I think of the album as a sequence of crystalline miniatures capturing time, the pianist says.

On the surface, there's nothing too innovative about this release from French pianist Hélène Grimaud: the music, with the exception of the two Bagatelles, Op. 1 of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov and the final Breathing Light of pianist-composer Nitin Sawhney, is all familiar, and the interview-style annotations with Grimaud, although the name of Heidegger is dropped, are pretty general in their evocation of the age-old association between music and memory. The surprise, then, is that when you get down to the actual performance, it's quite fresh.

Hélène Grimaud’s new album MEMORY can be thought as an invitation to mindfulness. Music that can help remind us that for all in our daily lives that is trivial, there is a place where meaning is stored. Memory is not concrete – it is a recollection of things past, defined as much by what fades as what remains. The repertoire here is not connected to specific personal memories for me – memory is not autobiographical or programmatic in that sense. My interest is rather in exploring memory as a state of consciousness.
