Although scorned by the French music establishment, Erik Satie’s innovations can still be heard in minimalism, muzak and even Aphex Twin. Nick Shave on the maverick composer at 150.
Erik Satie, Alan Marks – Collected Items From A Silent Dream (A Very Special Encounter With The Piano Music Of Erik Satie). Label: Decca – 425 208-2. Collected Items From A Silent Dream. 1. Ce Que Dit La Petite Princesse Des Tulipes.
Gymnopédie No. 1 is the first of "The Gymnopédies," three piano compositions published in Paris starting in 1888, written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie. Collectively, the Gymnopédies are regarded as an important precursor to modern ambient music - gentle yet somewhat eccentric pieces which, at the time of composition, defied the classical tradition. For instance, the first few bars of Gymnopédie No. 1 consist of an alternating progression of two major seventh chords, the first on the subdominant, G, and the second on the tonic, D. Gymnopédie Erik Satie.
The unconventional French composer Erik Satie almost wrote anti-music. In slow motion (and without bars) his well-known Gymnopédies glide past. In other pieces one can hear more than faint echoes form the vaudeville theatre.
Only 10 left in stock (more on the way). BONUS FOUR-HANDED PIANO MUSIC Trois Morceaux en forme de poire, Parade La Belle Excentrique, Aperçus desagreables, Desespoir agreable, Songe-Creux, En habit de cheval, Trois Petites Pieces montees. Erik Saties Gymnopedie No 1 might be a pop classic, but there s much, much more to the fascinating and eccentric French composer.

In the minds of some observers, Erik Satie was simply an eccentric composer of weird little ditties. True, his early musical education was unsatisfactory, and most of his works were miniatures for the piano which seemed very much to defy any of the expected conventions of music. Yet he should not be dismissed too hastily, because his ideas were to have a profound influence on many musical developments over a broad timespan. Foremost amongst those composers influenced by Satie was his contemporary Debussy, the later French composer Ravel, and Stravinsky. Nevertheless he was always well acquainted with the music of composers past and present, and did not like the large scale Romantic trends led by Wagner. For a while he earned a living playing the piano and accordion in bars and cafes in Montmartre, where he also wrote a number of popular songs.
Satie used humor very often to indicate his many strong views. From the winter of 1898–1899, Satie could be seen, as a daily routine, leaving his apartment in the Parisian suburb of Arcueil to walk across Paris to either Montmartre or Montparnasse, before walking back again in the evening.
