Lynyrd Skynyrd are an American rock band who popularized southern hard rock during the 1970's. Tragedy struck in 1977 when three band members were killed in a plane crash Last' was the original name of the posthumous album released in 1978. In 1998 it was renamed and released as 'Skynyrd's First Complete Muscle Shoals Album'.

This music is more notable for being interesting - in how it's possible to hear Ronnie VanZant coming into his own as a writer, or hearing future Blackfoot leader Ricky Medlocke's early songs - than it is for being good, which it certainly is.

If Van Zant seems less determinedly Southern than he later would, he appears even more quintessentially American.
