The band is Blackfoot, a Jacksonville hard rock outfit founded by Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke in 1970, and known for their hits Train, Train and Highway Song. So is Blackfoot, in a way. The name was a nod to Medlocke and his original bandmates' Native American heritage. They could play, and were heralded as real players in the Florida scene that produced Skynyrd,. 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, the Outlaws and other Southern rockers. They were known outside Florida; Rossi knew about them growing up in New England.

Bassist Banner Thomas and guitarist Steve Holland joined the band in 1974. Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant was slated to produce Molly Hatchet's first album, having helped in writing arrangements and directing rehearsals prior to his death. Molly Hatchet cut their first demos in Lynyrd Skynyrd's 8-track recording studio using their equipment. Lynyrd Skynyrd will headline the upcoming Southern Rock Cruise, departing on Jan. 6 out of Tampa, Florida. and heading to Mexico's Cozumel and Progreso, for a week of fun in the sun and non-stop music, with more than 24 musical acts taking the stage.
