Que diga "El hombre que vendió al mundo" puede ser interpretado como que el mismo, se vendió en algún momento de su vida. La canción refleja como que el Bowie joven no esta feliz con el Bowie de viejo, y el final queda abierto, como que al verse de viejo, empieza una búsqueda para saber que fue lo que le causo el vació como para venderse en algún punto de su vida, y tratar de evitar ese final.
