Sir Colin Davis and the Boston Symphony perform all of this music with idiomatic flair and unflagging enthusiasm. These versions are far superior to Davis's recent remakes on RCA, and a lot cheaper too. So go ahead, indulge. This 2-CD set pairs with the companion set (Sibelius: The Complete Symphonies 1) to make a complete set of 7 Symphonies. Even if you already have recordings of some of the symphonies, it's worth getting the full set. You can compare these recordings with those you already have and get that extra insight into the music provided by listening to alternative interpretations.

Sir Colin Davis recorded the complete symphonic cycle of Jean Sibelius three times, first in the 1970s with the Boston Symphony Orchestra on Philips, second in the 1990s with the London Symphony Orchestra on RCA, and third in the 2000s with the same orchestra on LSO Live.

Sir Colin Davis was instrumental in the development and success of LSO Live, including the label’s first Grammy award. He also played a huge part in the pre-eminence of the LSO across the globe for more than 50 years. A ‘master Sibelian’ his landmark cycle of the complete symphonies on LSO Live has been described as possibly "the finest Sibelius cycle on disc" by The Observer

Here, assembled and repackaged, are Colin Davis’s recordings of the Sibelius symphonies made live with the London Symphony Orchestra between September 2002 and July 2008. You also get the composer’s early symphonic poem for soloists, chorus and orchestra, Kullervo. Cue the lazy PR spiel that he’s among the world’s leading interpreters of the Finn’s music. In truth, Davis’s early Sibelius recordings with the Boston Symphony Orchestra have dated
