One was made in the mid-1970s by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis. And the other was made in the early 1990s by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under Herbert Blomstedt. It is from the latter symphony cycle that this recording is taken. And just like the Boston Symphony's efforts at Sibelius under Davis in the 70s, this orchestra's way with Sibelius is first rate from start to finish, with the appropriate amount of gravitas given to both the symphony and the two tone poems that stand both as companion pieces and popular works all their own.
