Science and Hypothesis (French: La Science et l'Hypothèse) is a book by French mathematician Henri Poincaré, first published in 1902. Aimed at a non-specialist readership, it deals with mathematics, space, physics and nature. It puts forward the theses that absolute truth in science is unattainable, and that many commonly held beliefs of scientists are held as convenient conventions rather than because they are more valid than the alternatives.

Science and Hypothesis book. Here is Poincaré's famous discussion of creative psychology. The nature of hypothesis and the role of probability are investigated with all of Poincaré's usual fertility of insight. Partial contents: On the nature of mathematical reasoning. Magnitude and experiment. Space: non-Euclidean geometrics, space and geometry, experiment and geometry. Force: classical mechanics, relative and absolute motion, energy and thermodynamics. Nature: hypotheses in physics, the theories of modern physics, the calculus of probabilities, optics and electricity, electro-dynamics. Poincaré's was the last man to take practically all mathematics, both pure and.

Science and Hypothesis: . .has been added to your Cart. Henri Poincaré (1854-1912) was a French mathematician, theoretical physicist, and a philosopher of science. David J. Science and Hypothesis" is a study written in 1902, by the French mathematician, Henri Poincaré. It was designed with non-specialist readers in mind, and contains information on mathematics, space, physics and biology. The main theme of this work is that the absolute truth of science is non-existent. It postulates that many scientific beliefs are closer to convenient conventions than valid explanations.

The scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, and he delights in it because it is beautiful. Beautiful, Math, Science. Dover Publications, New York 1952, 288 pp. Only the second of these two reprints is properly in the field of this JOURNAL, as the earlier book was written before the impact of mathematical logic and the logistic method on Poincares thinking about the foundations of mathematics. Both are of course English translations of the French originals
