Study guide of Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 novel "The Lost World," an important work of science fiction in which dinosaurs still roam the earth. First published in Strand Magazine in 1912, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World explored the idea that prehistoric life might still exist in unexplored areas of the globe. Part science fiction, part adventure story, the novel marks a significant shift in Doyle's writing, as he temporarily put aside the famous Sherlock Holmes to introduce professor Challenger, a physical, rude, bear-like man who would feature in several subsequent works. The Lost World has had a significant influence on science fiction, inspiring works including Michael Crichton's The Lost World, the related.

Suppose," he cried with feeble violence, "that all the debts in the world were called up simultaneously, and immediate payment insisted upon,-what under our present conditions would happen then?" I gave the self-evident answer that I should be a ruined man, upon which he jumped from his chair, reproved me for my habitual levity, which made it impossible for him to discuss any reasonable subject in my presence, and bounced off out of the room to dress for a Masonic meeting.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Although Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, Mycroft Holmes, and Professor James Moriarty are Doyle's most known creations, Professor Challenger, the hot-tempered scientist is another character that many readers will be familiar with. This is the first of the Professor Challenger series and the only one that I had If in 100 years I am only known as the man who invented Sherlock Holmes then I will have considered my life a failure. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Lost World is a good place to be for those of us looking to get lost in a dino world. This is a forerunner of the what-if history Who doesn't wish dinosaurs weren't still around? Well, maybe not the big bitey ones, but how cool would that be?!

However, with The Lost World, Conan Doyle explores several other themes as well. The idea of civilization, theories about the origin of life on earth and the various motives that people who seek adventure may have are some of the interesting concepts encountered here. In this story, Edward Malone is a young journalist who is sent to interview the bizarre claims made by Professor George Edward Challenger, who claims to have made an exciting discovery in South America. Malone himself wants to win the admiration of the lovely Gladys Hungerton. What follows is a strange, hazardous and rip-roaring adventure that takes Malone, the professor and a motley crew of adventurers into unknown territory. The Lost World is the first in the series of three novels and two short stories featuring Professor Challenger.
