Leonard Joseph Tristano (19 March 1919 – 18 November 1978) was a jazz pianist, composer and teacher of jazz improvisation. He performed in the cool jazz, bebop, post bop and avant-garde jazz genres. He remains a somewhat overlooked figure in jazz history, but his enormous originality and dazzling work as an improviser have long been appreciated by knowledgeable jazz fans. In addition, his work as a jazz educator meant that he has exerted a substantial influence on jazz through figures such as Lee Konitz and Bill Evans.
On Lennie Tristano, he alienated critics with compositions that discarded harmonies in favour of monochromatic moods intensified by roving improvisations in rhythm. The atonal qualities he’d brought to the scene instantly split both listeners and aficionados, creating an argument of whether temperate, austere music can truly come from a passionate place. That cold streak has routinely fuelled detractions about Tristano’s spot in the mausoleum of jazz greats. If one wanted to wax speculative, it could be said that the fact that Tristano taught music throughout the span of his life, starting to do so long before he was even a blip on the Greenwich Village scene, continuing even at the peak of his popular standings, seeped into and altered his sound. The pedantism that comes attached to the teaching process is almost expected to yield an innate detachment to the source material.
Crothers, who played with Lennie Tristano on the album ‘Swish’, said: Lennie once told me he felt that in all the world of art as we know it, all through the centuries, there was a dimension missing and that was the dimension of women. He really felt that if women were brought into the art expression of the times, that this dimension would express something for men and also for the world in its entirety.
