Description

Perfil: Metronome Magazine had an annual poll during 1939-1961 that picked who their readers considered the top jazz instrumentalists on each instrument for the year. In most cases, the group recorded two songs with short solos from practically all of the participants.

Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet; Bill Harris, trombone; Buddy DeFranco, clarinet; Flip Phillips, tenor sax; Nat King Cole, piano; Billy Bauer, guitar; Eddie Safranski, bass; Buddy Rich, drums. RKO Pathe Studios, NYC, December 21, 1947.

Thad Jones, trumpet; Eddie Bert, trombone; Tony Scott, clarinet; Lee Konitz, alto sax; Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, tenor sax; Serge Chaloff, baritone sax; Teddy Charles, vibes; Billy Taylor, piano; Tal Farlow, guitar; Charles Mingus, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The studio sessions were held in the years 1939-42, 1946–53, and 1956, and typically consisted of two tracks which allowed each participant a chance to solo for one chorus. Earlier recordings feature more swing style, while the later sessions tend more toward bebop.

Album: The Complete RCA Victor Recordings, Miles Davis - The Early Years (Vol. 2 (1947-1950)), Miles Davis - The Early Years. The Complete RCA Victor Recordings: Best 2 songs.
