Tristano's second album for Atlantic was recorded in 1961 and released the following year. The New Tristano, as was stressed on the album cover, consisted entirely of piano solos and no overdubbing or tape-speed manipulation was employed.

Side one has four selections and three alternates taken from a previously unknown session in which pianist Lennie Tristano teams up with the talented but now forgotten tenor Emmett Carls and several members of Woody Herman's Orchestra (trumpeter Shorty Rogers, trombonist Earl Swope, bassist Chubby Jackson and drummer Don Lamond). Although Tristano was not as well-known as the others at the time, his unique playing really influences the sound of the ensembles.
