Photograph: David Levene/The Guardian. For Deller, the commission provides the chance to return to what he describes as a lifetime creative obsession with Epstein. When I was five or six I can remember running, excited, into the kitchen after seeing the film Help! on television and telling my mother there were these people called the Beatles who were really great. As a young artist in London in 1994 he erected a plaque near Epstein’s Belgravia home and put a notice in the Telegraph’s In Memoriam pages that read: Epstein, Brian Samuel, 27 Aug 1967. Remembered this day and every day. J. Deller was intrigued by the blasphemous quality of the phrase Brian Epstein died for you, which he used on calling cards and T-shirts.
Brian Epstein talks openly about his early ambitions to be an actor, his preference for classical music and his fondness for all his clients. Did you know? Journalist and seasoned broadcaster Bill Grundy was the first person to present The Beatles to television audiences when he introduced their small-screen debut on Granada TV on 17 October, 1962.
The third album by Van Der Graaf Generator won over prog fans by featuring King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp. But Pawn Hearts turned out to be a confusingly heady trip for even the most attentive listeners. On "Man-Eng," singer/idea machine Peter Hammill showed off his operatic chops over processional keyboards and rollercoaster drums, then yowled, "How I can be free!" during a stampeding middle section that evolves into six minutes of kiting sax and keyboard abstraction. The band derided by punks like the Sex Pistols as epitomizing "dinosaur" rock performed thick, rich protest music here, with some of David Gilmour's most glorious blues playing amid bleak panoramas of processed sound. Consisting of three long tracks bookended by the gently acoustic "Pigs on a Wing," Animals was the first album Pink Floyd recorded in its own studio.

Ode to Joy was a fitting finale to Dr. Epstein's career at the Institute. The concert, at Kresge Auditorium on March 14, 1998, capped a 33-year career during which he brought the joy of music to the MIT campus. Dr. Epstein, 71, died on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass. from complications of lung and liver disease. A memorial service will be held in the Wong Auditorium in MIT's Tang Center at 2 .
