Ravel/Debussey: String Quartets.

Maurice Ravel completed his String Quartet in F major in early April 1903 at the age of 28. It was premiered in Paris in March the following year. The work follows a four-movement classical structure: the opening movement, in sonata form, presents two themes that occur again later in the work; a playful scherzo second movement is followed by a lyrical slow movement. The finale reintroduces themes from the earlier movements and ends the work vigorously.

Chilingirian String Quartet. Profile: Founded in 1971 by Levon Chilingirian and Philip De Groote.

The pairing of Claude Debussy's String Quartet in G minor with Maurice Ravel's String Quartet in F major has occurred often enough in recording history to be considered a time-honored practice, and the programming of these works together is especially worthwhile when the playing is of the high standards of the Talich Quartet. This Czech ensemble has specialized in the music of Dvorák, Smetana, Janácek, and other composers of its nationality, but the group's flair and feeling for these Gallic masterpieces is as convincing as one might expect from a French string quartet.

String Quartet in G minor, Op.

By Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Debussy and Ravel each only wrote one string quartet but both compositions enjoy a special place in the chamber muslc repertoire. Album of Easy String Quartets, Volume I (Pieces by Bach, Haydn, Mozart,. Complete Preludes, Books 1 & 2.

Debussy’s string quartet appeared five years later. Most of Franck’s followers hated it, which lets you know how radical the music must have seemed. While today we still see the lingering spores of German Romanticism in the work, it’s still the first string quartet that sounds French, rather than Teutonic. The Teutonicism comes from a certain harmonic cast, particularly in the first movement, and in the approach to form.
