Description

Great interpretation of Alexander Scriabin's The Poem of Ecstasy, played by the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen at 2010 BBC Proms.

Le Poème de l'extase (Poem of Ecstasy), symphony in C major, Op. 54. Alexander Scriabin. BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Vassily Sinaisky. Symphony No. 2 in C minor/major, Op. 29. 2. 1. Andante.

Alexander Scriabin's Symphony No. 2, Op. 29, in C minor was written in 1901 and first performed in St Petersburg under Anatol Lyadov on 12 January 1902. It is the most structurally conventional of all Scriabin's symphonies. The sombre initial theme of the first movement is developed to a triumphant hymn functioning as the main subject of the finale.

Vassily Sinaisky, the BBC Philharmonic's Chief Guest Conductor, is a champion of both Russian and English repertoire, and this Prom draws these two passions together. The evening opens with the first Proms performance of Parry's Symphonic Fantasia, and closes with Tchaikovsky's swansong, his 'Pathetique' Symphony. Vassily Sinaisky admits "even though it is my favourite piece, I try not to conduct it too much, as every performance of it should be a special event". Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 in B minor, 'Pathetique'. Nelson Goerner (piano) BBC Philharmonic Vassily Sinaisky (conductor).
