The longest work found within is the 1st sonata, an arch-romantic written in 1892 when the composer was just 20 and had been informed - erroneously, as it turns out - that his right hand was permanently injured form over-practicing, putting an end to Scriabin's ambitions as a concert pianist.

Ashkenazy may be faulted for rushing, and for more than a little explosiveness, but he must be accorded honors for producing one of the truly great Scriabin sets, both passionate and reasoned.

Scriabin's very first sonata, one movement in G sharp minor (companion movements have not been found), was only published posthumously and the second, in E flat minor, was condensed and rewritten to be the single movement Allegro Appassionato Op. 4. Scriabin was reportedly overpracticing Liszt's "Don Juan Fantasy" and Balakirev's Islamey when he damaged his right hand. He was informed by physicians that he would never play again.
