I'm Afraid of Americans" is a single by David Bowie from the 1997 album Earthling. The song, co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno, was originally written during Bowie's studio sessions for the 1995 album Outside but was not released until a rough mix appeared on the soundtrack to the film Showgirls, and was subsequently remade for Earthling. A top 20 hit in Canada, the rework also peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 16 weeks on that chart.
Bowie performed an extraordinary stylistic pivot between Diamond Dogs and Young Americans, and made it look easy – but as this new box set shows, it was a more convoluted and problematic shift than it appeared at the time. What an ironic album title. Because I can’t think of another way of explaining my feelings regarding this album. The one or two somewhat ok songs aren’t enough to get me to rank this any higher than last place. I actually like it even less now after listening to it all the way through the other day. This is really the only Bowie album that I would personally call bad. 24. David Bowie (1967). Like Blackstar, I didn’t really think it was fair to rank this album. After all, this is Bowie before he found his own voice . I discovered Bowie’s wider catalog around 1996. So this was his most current release at the time I stumbled into the mystical realms of David Bowie. I didn’t really care for it then. And I care even less for it now.
Directed by Tim Pope. Originally a Tin Machine song, written by Bowie/Gabrels. David re-recorded the track especially for The Ice Storm OST, released in 1997.
Image caption David Bowie: One of the defining artists of his generation. It's one year since music legend David Bowie died of cancer. The musician died two days after his 69th birthday, having kept his illness hidden from everyone except his family and closest collaborators. The album's artwork, which presents a single black star on a white background, is also loaded with symbolism. I can't think of anything else he would've read for," he told The Huffington Post. We approached him," the film's casting director, Amy Hubbard, later confirmed.
David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for CD releases of the album in 1984, 1990 and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues.
