Description

By far the most compelling interpretation of Mozart's string quartets comes from the Mozarteum, Salzburg.

Catalogue No: 4316862. Usually despatched in 1 - 2 working days. Lutosławski: String Quartet. Ligeti: String Quartet No. 1 'Métamorphoses nocturnes'. Schnittke: Canon in memoriam Igor Stravinsky for string quartet.

Ultimately, Schnittke's short Canon In Memoriam Igor Stravinsky is I think the best piece on this disc. With its simple gestures of searing intensity, it could have been written by the recently deceased, arch-maverick of Soviet music: Galina Ustvolskaya. All in all, there are probably better introductions to contemporary Soviet/Russian string quartets (those of Schnittke and Gubaidulina are masterpieces), but this disc is still a welcome addition for anyone seriously interested in contemporary Russian/Soviet music. 6 people found this helpful.

Kronos Quartet Performs Alfred Schnittke: The Complete String Quartets is a studio album by the Kronos Quartet. The double CD contains all four of Russian composer Alfred Schnittke's "startling" string quartets. String Quartet N. was recorded and released in 1988; the other three were recorded between 1994 and 1996 and released in 1998. All music composed by Alfred Schnittke.

Released in 2000 on Ars Musici, the sublime recordings by the Artemis Quartett of György Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1, "Métamorphoses nocturnes" (1953-1954), and his String Quartet No. 2 (1968) are valuable not only for the high quality of the music - surely some of the most communicative and rewarding quartet music since Bartók or Shostakovich

The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók wrote six string quartets, each for the usual forces of two violins, viola and cello: String Quartet No. 1, O., Sz. 40, BB 52. String Quartet No. 2, O. 7, Sz. 67, BB 75. 3, Sz. 85, BB 93. 4, Sz. 91, BB 95. 5, Sz. 102, BB 110. 6, Sz. 114, BB 119. Notable composers who have been influenced by them include.

Shostakovich: String Quartets Nos. 3, 7 & 8 Hagen Quartett. Ligeti: Clear or Cloudy. Ligeti: String Quartets, Ramifications, Etc. 2003. Mozart: String Quartets. Beethoven: String Quartets, Opp. 127 & 132. 2005.
