Hold/Still', their 3rd proper album, exists at the intersection of '20 Jazz Funk Greats' and 'Kid A' - a serpent's hiss that is also yearning and hot-blooded. Let's just cut to it. The wizardry of Suuns has been massively underrated. All the better a position from which to absolutely destroy you with 'Hold/Still'. Its contents are the proof as to why Suuns absolutely deserve to be listed next to the names of dark groove adventurers like Stott, Forest Swords, Arca and Haxan Cloak. On Hold/Still, the songs are more likely to result in spastic body movements with no real pattern. Such innate reactions are likely thanks in no small part to the album’s thumping bass synths and chant-like vocals that resemble a cult leader commanding his followers. It’s easy to involuntarily bob along to the crashing kick drum, searing bass synths, and incisive grunts of Resistance ; good luck not doing a weird 2010s reimagining of The Robot to the wordless chorus of Paralyzer. Yes, this is still Suuns we’re talking about here, so Hold/Still is far from lacking in intensely scary moments.

As with previous Suuns recordings, Hold/Still features minimal, hypnotic arrangements that are frequently blown out with distortion, but just as often feel spare and spacious. This time out, the group seems to have a bit more of an electronic sheen than on earlier efforts, but it still feels like there's a metronome-like human heart beating inside the machinery.
