Olu Dara Jones (born Charles Jones III; January 12, 1941) is an American cornetist, guitarist, and singer. He is the father of rapper Nas. Olu Dara was born Charles Jones III January 12, 1941, in Natchez, Mississippi. In the 1970s and '80s he played alongside David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Hamiet Bluiett, Don Pullen, Charles Brackeen, James Blood Ulmer, and Cassandra Wilson

Olu Dara played cornet for nearly 15 years before he performed publicly and became a fixture of the Downtown New York jazz circuit in the 1970s. And he didn't release an album under his own name until 1998, when he departed from the free-jazz and avant-garde scene with In the World: From Natchez to New York, which combined blues, jazz, afropop and hip-hop with a down-home, solo-free Southern vibe. On his new album, Neighborhoods, Dara notches up one for consistency with a disc that follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor. Being in straight jazz for so many years, I knew.
