Description

John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, first performed in 2012 in Los Angeles, is something of an expansion on the composer's El Niño, a Passion story adorned with a variety of contemporary themes and musical materials. Like the earlier work, it features a libretto by longtime Adams collaborator Peter Sellars, and it may be sung on-stage as an oratorio or presented as an opera. The music has similar ambitions and a similar way, although not so extreme, of veering off into contemporary vernacular materials according to the text.

Los Angeles Philharmonic & Los Angeles Master Chorale. About this recording. like a bird crucified in flight. In December 2000, the premiere of El Niño signaled a landmark in John Adams’ artistic evolution. This Nativity oratorio, premiered over the weeks of Christmas at Paris’ Châtelet Theater, conveyed a message of rebirth and hope attuned to what the composer sensed as the mood of the new millennium. Yet the very simplicity of this story of birth and renewal allowed Adams to evoke unsuspected undercurrents of darknessbeneath its reassuring light

John Adams ( 1947) The Gospel According to the Other Mary A Passion Oratorio in Two Acts. CD 1: - Act I. CD 2: - Act II. Performers: Mary Magdalene Kelley O’Connor Martha Tamara Mumford Lazarus Russell Thomas Countertenors Daniel Bubeck, Brian Cummings, Nathan Medley Los Angeles Master Chorale Los Angeles Philharmonic Gustavo Dudamel. At any rate, the work is never boring and often absorbing; the enthusiasm of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the vocal performers, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for the material is palpable; and this sprawling score is clearly recorded. Time will tell whether concert-music big events like this one will have staying power, but there's a lot to chew on here for anyone with the slightest liking for Adams and his democratic, synoptic musical world.

This world-premiere recording by the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, featuring the original cast and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, was captured during Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, at performances staged by Peter Sellars. Featured Artists: Los Angeles Philharmonic Gustavo Dudamel, Music & Artistic.

Venezuelan conductor and violinist Gustavo Dudamel. Alongside, the orchestra repeats rhythmic patterns in the uncomfortable way that you’d scratch an itch. Clearly, we’re far from the Gospel narratives trenchantly set by Bach and others.

JOHN ADAMS - The Gospel According To The Other Mary - Los Angeles Philharmonic - Los Angeles Master Chorale - Gustavo Dudamel - Directed by Peter Sellars. The Master Chorale is masterful and Gustavo Dudamel and his Los Angeles musicians prove themselves to be .. powerful theater, given extraordinary depth by music of remarkable authority, variety, and nuance. It is well worth exploring.
