Description

Alan Gilbert takes responsibility for the briefer pieces, Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Lollapalooza – both brilliantly played, pithy orchestral showpieces

Label: Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings. John Adams is considered the musical voice of America. Minimalism mixes with imaginative orchestration and a jazz-inflected spirit to create a cosmos full of energy and colour that constantly reveals new facets. In a unique transatlantic partnership, John Adams has accompanied the Berliner Philharmoniker for a whole season as composer in residence. Berliner Philharmoniker Rundfunkchor Berlin John Adams, conductor Alan Gilbert, conductor Gustavo Dudamel, conductor Kirill Petrenko, conductor Sir Simon Rattle, conductor.

During the season 2016/2017 John Adams has accompanied the Berliner Philharmoniker as composer in residence. The orchestra performed a wide variety of his works, from the oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary and the famous Harmonielehre to more unfamiliar treasures. The concerts were conducted by chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle and outstanding guests: Gustavo Dudamel, Alan Gilbert and Kirill Petrenko. In the course of this partnership, John Adams himself also made his debut as conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker.

He conducts the Passion oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary which, with multi-faceted, pulsating music, is devoted to the fascina. During the 2016/2017 season, John Adams accompanied the Berliner Philharmoniker as their Composer in Residence.

Gustavo leads the Berliner Philharmoniker in Adams's City Noir, which was premiered by Gustavo and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2009. He and John Adams have had a creative friendship since they met in Caracas in 2005. To see the development of the genius of a composer," says Gustavo, "to be close to his mind and to his soul, that is unique. The collection also spotlights performances by Leila Josefowicz, Simon Rattle, Alan Gilbert, Kirill Petrenko, and more, capturing live concerts from the 2016/17 season. Listeners can discover new recordings of Harmonielehre, Scheherazade. 2, The Gospel According to the Other Mary, Short Ride in a Fast Machine, and The Wound-Dresser.

Gustavo Dudamel (photo: Monika Rittershaus). Gustavo Dudamel conducts Bernstein and Shostakovich. In 1944, at the age of just 25, Leonard Bernstein conducted the first performance of his First Symphony, a work based on the Old Testament lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah and which demonstrates astonishing musical and intellectual maturity. The same expressive intensity characterises Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which dates from the same time, but from a completely different sound world. The conductor of this exciting juxtaposition is Gustavo Dudamel. Tamara Mumford made her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in January 2017 under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle in John Adam’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary.
