Description

Electric Wizard's latest album may be loud, but the band itself feels like they're writing these songs on autopilot. Fav tracks: incense for the damned, time to die. Least fav track: sadiowitch.

Time to Die is the eighth studio album by English doom metal band Electric Wizard. It was released on 29 September 2014. It is their debut on Spinefarm, having left Rise Above. The album is the longest Electric Wizard studio album to date (excluding bonus tracks and the added silence at the end of Dopethrone). Jus Oborn – guitar, vocals, bass. Liz Buckingham – guitar. Mark Greening – drums, hammond organ. Chris Fielding - Mixing. Jus Oborn - Production.

Recorded At – Skyhammer Studio.

Electric Wizard never really had a true fall from grace, but their first album in four years isn't quite the kick in the pants it was supposed to be. The band switched from Rise Above Records to Spinefarm and brought original drummer Mark Greening back in the fold, but recent disputes with Rise Above and Greening have soured this release's presentation. Fortunately, they still got a decent album out despite the unflattering aftershocks. After a good decade of psychedelic flirtations, Time To Die sees Electric Wizard going out of their way to recapture the old Dopethrone vibe

The more things change the more they stubbornly remain the same in Electric Wizard's world. Time to Die signals more lineup changes in the return of original drummer Mark Greening (he has since been replaced by the man he replaced, Simon Poole).

The turn of the century saw Electric Wizard’s most celebrated album, 2000’s Dopethrone. Strewn with titanic Metal riffs, marijuana references, and horror movie camp, Dopethrone not only defined Electric Wizard’s sound and image, it also came to be recognized as one of the finest albums in the genre. Following the successes Electric Wizard has seen with Come My Fanatic. nd Dopethrone, the band released a string of solid albums from 2002 to 2010. Time to Die, more than anything, is a tar pit. From the moment the first chord is struck in Incense for the Damned, the listener is and struck with a sudden jolt of Doom-induced paralysis and sucked in. Jus Osborn and fellow guitarist Liz Buckingham’s massive guitar tones, paired with Count Orlof’s chunky bass tones give the same creeping impression as that of a cockroach burrowing into one’s skin.

How many times, in a 40+ year span, can the original Black Sabbath album be rehashed, in turn repackaged and ultimately renamed? Apparently thousands of times, if not countless. And when it comes to bands like Electric Wizard, I wouldn't have it any other way...

To me, Electric Wizard are the AC/DC of doom, releasing the same thing, album after album. Standard, run of the mill. This is an Electric Wizard album, period. I was really hoping for something good, and it's not horrible, it's just the same album they've been releasing for years under different titles. Kept waiting for a riff to make me stop and say "Wow, that was cool" and no such luck. The songs are too long and pointlessly so (also as usual). I understand that is part of the bands style, but enough is enough. Fanboys will enjoy this. To others, I highly recommend you check out other bands playing the same style of music with some originality at least attempted, there are plenty out there. Also, as far as the whole Ricky Kasso theme, there is a band more or less dedicated to him (Acid King), to me, EW using this is just more unoriginality.

What the hell is wrong with being the AC/DC of anything?

I agree with you. I really loved Electric wizard up to Let us prey. After that everything kinda sounds the same. Not bad, just the same. no suprise. not a single riff that will amaze you. everything evolves except for the wizard.

I must admit, if you were searching for a great place to troll Dopethrone, then you did well.
