In his other life, as an illustrator, Clarke relies on old-fashioned drawing skills. He also designed Hollow Ground ’s cover ar. The combination of ingenuity and patience that this work requires is also reflected in Cut Worms’ music. Clarke rotates between electric, acoustic, and lap steel guitars, as well as bass and keyboards, stacking instruments to create the illusion of simple songwriting.

Cut Worms have announced the details of their debut album, Hollow Ground, out on May 4 via Jagjaguwar. Hollow Ground was written in Clarke’s Brooklyn home, where he still demos songs, and the record was recorded in the . home studio of Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, and in New York with Jason Finkel at Gary’s Electric. Sometimes, on Hollow Ground, we find characters impossibly lustful, sometimes brooding, while in other parts they fumble along, hopeful and painfully self-aware. If the music can be said to have any sort of through-line, it revolves around Clarke’s obvious delight in singing his heart out through varying degrees of agony.

Cut Worms' Max Clarke took his love of the Everlys one step further, and on his debut album, Hollow Ground, re-creates their vintage sound on a set of ten songs that have all the heart and soul of the brothers' best work. With producers Jonathan Rado and Jason Finkel helping out, Clarke plays most of the instruments, vocally plays the role of both Phil and Don, and masterfully straddles the line between soda shop-sweet pop and richly twangy country as Hollow Ground's mix of jangling uptempo tracks, quiet ballads loaded with lap and pedal steel, and swaying midtempo doo wop roll.
