The band is best known for its 1976 number one hit The Combine Harvester but has a history stretching nearly 40 years, and still performs to this day. In its heyday the band was very popular despite disdain from "serious" critics.

It appears to be short for mangelwurzel, a crop grown to feed livestock, and wurzel is also sometimes used in the UK (perhaps only as a result of the band's name) as a synonym for yokel.
