The Henry Cow Legend (often referred to as Legend or Leg End ) is the debut album of British avant-rock group Henry Cow. It was recorded at Virgin Records' Manor studios over three weeks in May and June 1973, mixed in July 1973, and released in August 1973. With the exception of "Nine Funerals of the Citizen King", which the whole group sings, and background voices on "Nirvana for Mice" ("Sweet mystery of life I will remember"), "Teenbeat" and "The Tenth Chaffinch", this is an instrumental album

Henry Cow's sound here is perhaps the easiest to describe in their discography

Leg End: Original Mix. Henry Cow. Play on Napster. If there is one album that connects the dots between fusion, progressive rock and avant-garde classical more completely than any other, Henry Cow's debut, 1973's Leg End, just might be it. This is one dazzling, daring and demanding record. Performing a tenuous balancing act between free improv and compositional complexity, the group unleashes some truly amazing acrobatics when it comes to rhythm and melody. In a lot of ways Henry Cow is the sonic equivalent of a pointillism painter.

Their sound draws on modern classical music, jazz and experimental music. In Praise of Learning" was a collaboration with SLAPP HAPPY, which featured in the addition of a real vocalist (the infamous Dagmar KRAUSE), Pete BLEGVAD and Anthony MOORE. The attention of members of the group would now go towards the "Art Bears". It was then decided that this album would be an all instrumental album, thus staying away from any commercial appeal pretty much. What ended up happening, after all was said and done, is this excellent album of Rock in Opposition, probably the best of all of the Henry Cow albums. What you get here is some of the best avant-prog out there with a huge dose of free form jazz.

Amazing album that I bought on vinyl, and sounds good on this CD reissue. I understand that the mastertape is lost. I can't work out whether Henry Cow are snobs looking down their noses, or lads having a laugh. The music at the end of whatever process they're employing is outstanding in every sense - not the only validation they achieve. A deserved vindication. I'm not as converse with some of this stuff as I'd like to think.

Filed under Jazz Related Rock By HENRY COW. more. Whether LegEnd by Henry Cow is an "RIO" album or not seems to be a matter of debate. For my part, I would say that the term "RIO" is meaningless when applied to anything released before the actual RIO festivals were set up, because the participants in them had very little in common musically beyond being shunned by the record companies and having an avant- garde approach to progressive music.
