The Wall is the eleventh studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd, released 30 November 1979 on Harvest and Columbia Records. A rock opera, its story explores Pink, a jaded rockstar whose eventual self-imposed isolation from society is symbolised by a wall. The record was a commercial success, charting at number one in the US for 15 weeks, and number three in the UK. In 1982, the album was adapted into a feature film of the same name, directed by Alan Parker.

Notes

1st pressing with picture labels in gatefold sleeve with plastic sticker that adheres to the sleeve, but is not permantly stuck on.

Inner sleeves also feature the "Wall" design with lyrics (graphics by Gerald Scarfe).

The track order on the inners is not the same as featured on the album.

Specific to the first issue sleeve:

Band members are not listed on the inside cover. It only says "Words and Music - Roger Waters. Except..." and "Produced By David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters". Re-pressings added band member credits and had other minor alterations.

No bar code on the back cover.

The Wall is cream coloured, not true white. The bricks on the front cover are not aligned right to the bottom of the cover on the outside or inside.

There are two 1st pressing sleeve variants:

1. A single sheet of wrap-around cardboard with the seam across the inner top edge of the cover.
2. Two sheets of cardboard, with seams at the top and bottom of the cover. Cardboard is heavy thickness.

There are two 1st pressing lyric inner sleeve variants (Both are on thick card with rounded corners and a nine-inch thumb notch at the top):

1. Sides 2 and 4 have the catalog number of the specific record listed on a single line in the lower right corner.
2. Sides 2 and 4 have the catalog number (SHDW 411), international catalogue number (OC-158 63410), and the UK catalogue number (SHSP 4111) in the lower right corner.

Mastered at The Mastering Lab (Los Angeles, CA, USA).

Recorded at Superbear (Miravel, France), Producers Workshop (Los Angeles, CA, USA) & C.B.S. (New York, NY, USA) between April and November 1979.

Three different catalog numbers, one for the album and one for each disc:

SHDW 411 = album
OC-15863410 SHSP 4111 = disc 1
OC-15863411 SHSP 4112 = disc 2

Notes

3 panel thin glossy paper inlay printed both sides. Blue cassette with red paper labels. Dolby System. Housed in blue/clear cassette case with EMI logo.

There are some inconsistencies between the inlay track list and label track list, for example:
The inlay styles the titles of Another Brick In The Wall as "part 1", "part 2" etc, while on the labels these are shows as "(I)", "(II)" etc. Tracks A8 onwards on side A are misnumbered and neither A13 or B13 are listed on the labels.

Also issued with on-body print (Also alongside with these other 2 versions: Pink Floyd - The Wall / Pink Floyd - The Wall )

On cassette labels:
"Made in Germany"

1 The Wall 1:35:00

Notes

"The story of THE WALL is told simply with the music of Pink Floyd, images and natural effects. There is no conventional dialogue to progress the narrative. Our story is about Pink, a Rock and Roll performer, who sits locked in a hotel room, somewhere in Los Angeles. Too many shows, too much dope, too much applause: a burned out case. On the TV, an all too familiar war film flickers on the screen. We shuffle time and place, reality and nightmare as we venture into Pink's painful memories, each on a "brick" in the wall he has gradually built around his feelings. Slowly he withdraws from the real world and slips further into his nightmare as he imagines himself as unfeeling demagogue, for whom all that is left is the demonstration of power over his unthinking audience, the culmination of the odious excess of his own world and the world around him. His internal self trial follows, as the witnesses of his past life, the very people who have contributed to the building of the wall, come forward and testify against him." – Alan Parker
