The Shape of Things to Come is a work of science fiction by H. G. Wells, published in 1933, which speculates on future events from 1933 until the year 2106. A long economic slump causes a major war that leaves Europe devastated and threatened by plague.

Before I saw David Bowie live, I was just your normal, dysfunctional, rebellious teenager from the Midwest, and he has truly changed my life. It was the first rock concert that I ever saw and it was a major event in my life. Image caption U2 followed Bowie to Berlin to record their Achtung Baby album. Bowie's innovative use of fashion, lighting, dance and imagery are an important part of his legacy - but that's not to underplay the influence of his music. He had admirers in rock, punk, hip-hop and pop, while even classical composers like Philip Glass - who based two symphonies on Mr Bowie's albums Low and Heroes - were not immune to his charms. There are musicians who are influenced by him who don't even realise it. Johnny Marr.

David Bowie, the brazen British singer-songwriter who had an immeasurable influence on music, art and style, becoming one of the most important pop culture figures of the last century, died on Sunday. Bowie released a new album, Blackstar, a collaboration with a New York jazz quintet, on Friday, Jan. 8 - on his birthday. Bowie managed to keep his cancer diagnosis a secret amid years of rumors about the state of his health circulated among fans and music industry insiders  . David Bowie spent most of the Sixties trying desperately to become a famous musician. He knocked around in groups like the Manish Boys and Davie Jones with the King Bees and released solo singles like "The Laughing Gnome," but nothing seemed to work. Finally, he teamed up with Elton John producer Gus Dudgeon to create "Space Oddity," a song he'd been fiddling with all year.

This 1969 release features David Bowie's first hit single, "Space Oddity," and sets the tone for the spacey Ziggy Stardust to come. But other than the title track, Space Oddity isn't a glam-rock album. For that phase, one must move ahead to 1970's The Man Who Sold the World. These folk-based tracks largely present Bowie as a surrealist singer-songwriter. The bitter and sarcastic "Letter to Hermione" is the most impassioned track here, presenting, as it does, the angry side of this master of cool

This spaced-out spaceman and crucified media victim was possibly named, according to the Bowie scholar Nicholas Pegg, after Brixton music hall regular Tom Major – the father of future prime minister John. 12 The androgynous Bowie of legend came to the fore in 1970 when he wore a flowing dress on the cover of his third album, The Man Who Sold the World, and to attendant interviews. 13 His bisexuality – both real and knowingly created through his personae – became central to his appeal to new generations of outsiders.
