El Pintor is the fifth studio album by Interpol. It was released on September 9, 2014 in North America on Matador Records. The album title, which means the painter in Spanish, is an anagram of Interpol. It is the band’s first album without bassist Carlos Dengler, who departed the band after the self-titled release in 2010. The role of bass was taken over by frontman Paul Banks, and the album features guest appearances by Brandon Curtis of The Secret Machines, Jellyfish’s Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. and Rob Moose of Bon Iver.

Obviously this Album is a progression from the Interpol in 2002. Nevertheless this album is a fantastic return to form for this band. There are many features of the music which have changed in character, but have not necessarily diminished in terms of musicianship. So I took another try with El Pintor, it still sounds different, due to the lack of powerful and unique basslines. But if you love Interpol as I do, you'll be cool with this album, but it's not their best work in my opinion. TOTBL and Antics are their Masterpieces, that will probably not be reached anytime soon. You can't find a bassist like Carlos D used to be, unfortunately
El Pintor is Interpol's shortest album, and its music is the closest to the ideal form of the band's sound: Kessler's guitar swings between prodding, angular lines and dreamy washes; Fogarino provides crisp punctuation; and Banks' tative baritone gives more form to abstract lyrics such as "There is a slope like an appetite" (Banks also steps in for. Dengler, and does an able, if slightly less distinctive, job). Throughout the album, the trio, joined by Secret Machines' Brandon Curtis, delivers archetypal examples of many of its sounds.
With El Pintor, Interpol delivered a refreshing, yet familiar album that impresses right with at the first listen. With an opener like All TheWith El Pintor, Interpol delivered a refreshing, yet familiar album that impresses right with at the first listen. With an opener like All The Rage Back Home, this album clearly shows a band that is comfortable with itself and sounds better than ever. If hearing it isn't enough, you can watch the making of video (it's on YouTube) to see what I mean. The album doesn't even sound like ToTBL. It kind of sounds like the album that should have been released between Antics and OLTA. I might be one of the few Interpol fans that think that Antics is better than ToTBL, and as a fan of the band I think El Pintor is at the same level of those two records. 4 of 4 users found this helpful.
With El Pintor, its first album since the 2010 departure of founding bassist Carlos Dengler, Interpol is reborn-older, wiser, and learning to take each crisis in stride. El Pintor is ultimately more pleasurable than it is painful, enough of a distraction to recall how important Interpol seemed at one time and how they can still pull off the illusion of importance after all these years.
