Ersson’s band has been touring for four years now, and its second album was recorded live at the 2002 Stockholm Jazz Festival. From Allyn Ferguson’s flamboyant Away We Go to the closing medley from Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story, everything is taken straight from the Buddy Rich library, which makes comparing the two bands rather easy. On the whole, the Swedes play notably well as a unit, but they aren’t quite as tight as Buddy’s band, and there are one or two brief but audible missteps that would have incurred Buddy’s unbridled wrath.

Swingin' New Big Band. 1966 was a most illogical time for anyone to try forming a new big band but Buddy Rich beat the odds. This CD reissues the first album by the Buddy Rich Orchestra, augmenting the original Lp program with nine previously unissued performances from the same sessions. The arrangements (eight by Oliver Nelson along with charts by Bill Holman, Phil Wilson, Jay Corre, Don Rader and others) swing, put the emphasis on the ensembles and primarily feature Corre's tenor although trumpeter Bobby Shew, altoist Pete Yellin, pianist John Bunch and guitarist Barry Zweig are also heard from.

Big Swing Face is a 1967 live album and the second album by Buddy Rich and his 1960s big band. The Beat Goes On" is a feature for Rich's daughter Cathy, whose vocal performance was overdubbed later at United Recording in Hollywood. A reissue in 1996 doubles the listing with nine previously unreleased performances from the same engagement at the Chez Club in Hollywood. LP side A: "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" (Lennon and McCartney) – 2:57. Big Swing Face" (Bill Potts) – 5:15.

Big Swing Face: A Tribute to Buddy Rich premiered on Sept. 26 at the Howard Brubeck Theatre for jazz-lovers and Buddy Rich fans alike. There was a multitude of people waiting outside the theater, a mixture of students, kids and other members of the community. Director Paul Kurokawa began the concert by asking if anyone had met Buddy Rich. Several hands went up. One man in particular was Robert Evans, an Encinitas resident who said after the concert that he had heard Buddy Rich play in the 1970s at a nightclub called the Bacchanal in San Diego
