The 1949 Duke Ellington big band made few worthwhile studio recordings, which makes this LP (consisting of material from radio broadcasts) of great interest to Ellington collectors. Recorded at a time when Al Killian was leading the trumpet section and both Ben Webster and Al Sears were on tenor, this nearly one-hour set contains an extended version of "The Tattooed Bride," superior versions of "How High the Moon," "St. Louis Blues" (and even "Singin' in the Rain") and many fine solos from a somewhat forgotten version of Duke.

Alias: Ben Pollack And His Orchestra, Earl Jackson And His Musical Champions, Harlem Hot Chocolates, Irving Mills And His Orchestra, Joe Turner And His Memphis Men, Louisiana Rhythmakers, Mills' Ten Blackberries, Sam Lanin And His Dance Orchestra, Ten Black Berries, The Chicago Footwarmers, The Georgia Syncopators, The Harlem Footwarmers, The Jungle Band (2), The Whoopee Makers.

This is the discography of Duke Ellington. Most of these recordings are listed by the year they were recorded rather than year released. Reissues are listed for most of the recordings released before the 1950s, as the original 78s are rare.

Right up to the end Duke Ellington maintained an ability to surprise lesser mortals with his impish wit. In 1969 he visited the White House to celebrate his 70th birthday and kissed President Richard Nixon on the cheek four times. When Nixon asked why four times, Ellington replied, "One for each cheek. After these shenanigans in Washington, it was business as usual for the Ellington band. In November: a European tour, one of the highlights of which was this concert at the 2,200-seat Doelen Concert Hall in the Dutch port of Rotterdam. The De Doelen had reopened just three years previously after being rebuilt. The original hall was destroyed by a German bombardment in 1940 at the start of World War Two. The band still had plenty of great soloists. The saxophone section included Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor and Harry Carney on baritone.
