Album · 2003 · 12 Songs. More By My Morning Jacket.
It Still Moves is the third album by the rock band My Morning Jacket. The album also marks the first appearance of drummer Patrick Hallahan, as well as the final appearances of guitarist Johnny Quaid and keyboardist Danny Cash. The album was remixed and reissued by ATO Records in May 2016.
But It Still Moves almost immediately confirms that the spacy Southern psych that My Morning Jacket built their name on remains their bread and butter. Mahgeetah" is full of the long, drawn-out vocals that made "Can You See the Hard Helmet on My Head?" such an affecting and seemingly meaningful question; it also carries over the texture of that song, building a small epic out of the same elements. When he hits the lines, "It wasn't till I woke up/ That I could hold down a joke or a job or a dream/ But then all three are one in the same," it should put a lump in your throat. And with that, It Still Moves strums to a close, an album by turns beautiful and possessed, by others raucous and fiery.

It Still Moves, I explained to my friends from another era, is an album that simply kicks ass. It was My Morning Jacket's third studio release and it originally came out in 2003, a year that belonged to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Outkast and the White Stripes. To describe the band's style, I started by saying that My Morning Jacket was a band of extremes that blends sparse acoustic guitars with loud, classic rock-like riffs and that frontman Jim James' vocals were always soaked in reverb, making it sound like he recorded his voice in a giant barn
Only 6 left in stock (more on the way). 2003's It Still Moves shows the absolute peak of the early sound of MMJ. All the earlier sounds are still there, the reverb vocals, the sparkly guitars, the classic rock production, but this time, the songs are bigger and brighter, and there are expertly-placed hooks all around. With a major label debut and a higher budget, the songs are right in your face, with some interesting surprises to boot (Memphis horns, anybody?). Scott Floman said it best: "This is the rare album that can appeal to the stoner set who just want to "chill out" and rocker types who'd also like the band's uniquely spacey brand of Southern psychedelia. It's appeal is broad, from the jam-band crowd to the hipsters to your parents. This is the kind of album that will last forever.
