Thematically at least, Get Lonely is the sparest, bleakest record in the Mountain Goats' discography. Much was made of the unprecedentedly autobiographical content of The Sunset Tree and We Shall All Be Healed, and it is true that they conveyed a sustained emotional potency that was largely new to Darnielle's repertory, but both contained so many lyrical loose ends, disjointed perspectives, and ambiguous imagery that it was difficult if not impossible to glean any consistent context in. them, let alone a coherent through-line. Get Lonely, on the other hand, is practically monotonous.

The album has a nice fuller rounder sound, lyrically strong and with just some great and interesting tracks. Other highlights songs for me are "Sax Rohmer and "San Bernardino". The Mountain Goats have such an expansive discography that the albums that resonate with someone is usually a very personal experience.

With his fifteenth album, alt-country stalwart John Darnielle has created the ultimate break-up album. Now, being in a happy relationship myself, it just feels impossible for me to really "get" this album, and, to be honest, I don't ever want to. Don't get me wrong, though, this is an amazing album, with superb music, and lyrics full of despair and ephemeral imagery

The Mountain Goats is the musical project of singer-songwriter, novelist, pianist and guitarist John Darnielle. He has the distinction of being named by the The New Yorker magazine as 'America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist'; in its June 2006 issue, Paste magazine dubbed Darnielle one of the '100 Best Living Songwriters'. Darnielle’s lyrics are erudite and compassionate and filled with imagery that reference classical literature, religion, mythology, culture, art, and history.
