The interview with Frank Zappa was one of his last and I first saw it in early '93 when I taped it on VHS. In those days TV was not the horrible medium it is today, there were some decent Arts programmes and not Kirsty Wark showing how ignorant she is by hosting a cretinous book club or the X Factor. Hope you like this clip.

Frank asked Pauline to type up the lyrics of his album, Absolutely Free – a task she found somewhat baffling. Out of this encounter a friendship grew, and Pauline was invited to work for Frank in Los Angeles, where regular visitors to his log cabin home in Laurel Canyon included Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Captain Beefheart
Frank Zappa calls up Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band and tells them the album he is producing for them is done. The Captain instructs the band to dress in their Sunday best clothes before they all go to the studio and listen to the complete finished work for the first time. Trout Mask Replica is a touchstone in the history of recorded music.
Dysfunctional family’s visit to German TV caught in preparation and in action: rough, ready and rocking to the hilt. Still, it’s not only melodies and delivery the focus of this DVD, as Motorhead Sherwood and Don Preston unfold a comic routine with incidental music delivered on cue from the giggling Zappa. Preston wouldn’t get to play his sax during the aired part of the show but he’s often a visual center of the gig, sitting and reading a mag while having his hair groomed as his compadres get ready to strike and Frank seems to be somewhere else.
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo (1972). Zappa once said of this and its predecessor, Waka/Jawaka: They sold a few copies in Scandinavia. Zappa’s best satirical work, mercilessly savaging the late- 60s flower-power culture. The sleeve parodies The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper album, while songs like Who Needs The Peace Corps? and Flower Punk burst the balloon of hippie hubris. For all that it ribs the Grateful Dead set, however, it also appealed to the same fan base and is as much a classic album of that era as Live Dead. Presented as a sound collage, it is a little bit like flicking across the radio dial between Top 40 pap and ‘challenging’ soundscapes like The Chrome Plated Megaphone Of Destiny.
