Pathways is a live album by the Dave Holland Octet. The album was recorded live at New York City’s Birdland jazz club. The record was released on March 23, 2010 via Dare2 label.

Pathways is a live album by the Dave Holland Octet. Pathways" (Dave Holland) - 10:46. How's Never" (Holland) - 13:03. Sea of Marmara" (Chris Potter) - 9:03. Ebb and Flow" (Holland) - 10:48. Blue Jean" (Holland) - 7:28.

Holland, in his multi-decade career, has worked within every conceivable format, and he smartly positions the octet precisely where it should be by definition, midway between the standard small-group configuration and the all-bases-covered grandness of a big band. The arrangements often seem larger than life while simultaneously feeling succinct, and every solo - not the least of which are Holland's own masterful excursions - is carefully considered and masterfully executed.

With the two extra saxophones and the trumpet of Alex Sipiagin, Holland's band sounds a lot like his standard quintet (vibes, not piano) but filled out more. One of his best albums ever with a lot of energy and fabulous playing. And the live setting at Birdland in NYC makes it even more vital and exciting.
