David Live gave us a glimpse of the soul side of Bowie but what was missing was a live album from the Ziggy Stardust era. This album filled that need. Ironically I never purchased Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on CD as I already had a Santa Monica concert from that era. Still there were songs on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars that weren't on the Santa Monica CD, namely "My Death," "All the Young Dudes," "Oh You Pretty Things" and "Wild Eyed Boys. Great album! Must have for serious Bowie fans.
The Spiders from Mars were rock singer David Bowie's backing band in the early 1970s, and initially consisted of Mick Ronson on guitars, Trevor Bolder on bass guitar, and Mick Woodmansey on drums. The group had its origins in Bowie's earlier backing outfit the Hype, which featured Ronson and Woodmansey, but Tony Visconti on bass. They were briefly signed as a band on its own, known as Ronno.
The remix of this only official live album from the Ziggy Stardust shows is dreadful. Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture doesn't have the electric excitement of the Live in Santa Monica '72 boot, and that's the fault of the remix by Mike Moran, Bruce Tergeson, Tony Visconti, and Bowie. The shame of it all is that this double disc was released after David Live and Stage, and while the upside is it makes for a rare, three double-live sets from one performer, the downside is that the best of those three albums has the worst mix on official record.

Stream songs by David Bowie & The Spiders From Mars & similar artists! . The clich+¬ about David Bowie is that he was a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated a remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter.
The album features glam rock tracks Bowie writes alongside his Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson on tracks like Hang on to Yourself and Suffragette City with an irresistible blend of sexy, campy pop and blues power. The anthem Ziggy Stardust is one of Rock’s earliest and best power ballads The album title comes from the Brecht/Weill opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny), first performed in 1930 but banned by the Nazis three years later. The London production at Sadler’s Wells Opera in January 1963 was conducted by Colin Davis.
