The album features glam rock tracks Bowie writes alongside his Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson on tracks like Hang on to Yourself and Suffragette City with an irresistible blend of sexy, campy pop and blues power. The anthem Ziggy Stardust is one of Rock’s earliest and best power ballads. The documentary was filmed at the same concert in 1973, where Bowie decided to retire the Ziggy Stardust persona. This album was also selected by the Library of Congress, for preservation in the National Recording Registry, in 2017. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Q&A.

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (sometimes called Bowie 1973) is a 1973 documentary and concert film by D. A. Pennebaker. It features David Bowie and his backing group The Spiders from Mars performing at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973. At this show, Bowie made the sudden surprise announcement that the show would be "the last show that we'll ever do", later understood to mean that he was retiring his Ziggy Stardust persona.

The Spiders From Mars’ included guitarist Mick Ronson, who plays with a maverick flair on Suffragette City, Moonage Daydream, and Hang Onto Yourself, Trevor Bolder on bass, Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey on drums. Ronson also doubled on keyboards. Backing vocals on It Ain’t Easy, the album’s one non-original, were supplied by the statuesque Dana Gillespie. The album cover shows David Bowie, dressed as Ziggy Stardust, standing outside the furriers, K. West, which was located at 23 Heddon Street, just behind London’s Regent Street.

David Bowie during the Ziggy Stardust Tour. The character was inspired by British rock 'n' roll singer Vince Taylor whom David Bowie met after Taylor had had a breakdown and believed himself to be a cross between a god and an alien, though Taylor was only part of the blueprint for the character. After recording some of the new songs for radio presenter Bob Harris's Sounds of the 70s as the newly dubbed Spiders from Mars in January 1972, the band returned to Trident in early February to record the final master takes of "Starman", "Suffragette City" and "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide". In 1997, Ziggy Stardust was named the 20th greatest album of all time in a Music of the Millennium poll conducted in the UK by HMV Group, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM.

It sounds like a cliché, but to an entire generation this album has become a yardstick by which to measure all others. Why the hyperbole? Because the strength of Ziggy lies in its completeness. One was his adoption of three lads from Hull as his backing band, renaming them the Spiders From Mars and thus making the wild Les Paul stylings of guitarist Mick Ronson an essential element of his sound. The second was young David''s choice of producer. Most people associate Tony Visconti (the man who gave Bolan his glam sheen and who had played on and produced the aforementioned metal album The Man Who Sold The World) with this period. It was, in fact, with his previous album Hunky Dory that DB found the perfect studio partner for this phase in his mercurial career.

Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Wierd and Gilly, The Spiders from Mars. He played it left hand, but made it too far, Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's Band.
