If you're looking for vintage Silverstein though, "Mirror Box" has you covered. It gets a bit too poppy later on with "Cut and Run" and "The Afterglow" but by that time you know what you got yourself into. A nostalgic trip that should be enjoyed for what it is-a look back at the salad days.
Dead Reflection is the ninth studio album from Canadian Post-Hardcore band Silverstein. Silverstein began writing material for their next album just one year after the release of their eighth studio album, I Am Alive in Everything I Touch. Ghost" a preliminary song released before the announcement of their ninth studio album. Silverstein would would announce the release date of Dead Reflection on May 18th 2017 along with the release of the second single "Retrograde".
Dead Reflection sees Silverstein go through many different styles. There are songs like The Afterglow, which leans heavily on pop, and songs such as Retrograde, which go a lot heavier. Were you consciously trying to write lots of different types of songs with this album? TOLD: I don’t think it was conscious.
In retrospect, Silverstein couldn’t have played their hand more poorly leading up to the release of Dead Reflection. Though the record’s four pre-release tracks were brilliant singles, Dead Reflection as a whole rarely comes close to even matching the bar they set. The heavy, crushing direction promised by those cuts also proved little but a red herring, as dynamic opener Last Looks is the only non-single to boast this guitar-driven sound. With this remarkably poor album construction, paired with a classic case of unmet expectations, Dead Reflection stumbles before it even has a chance to get going. Yet, it’s still a pretty damn good record. Though the sound and quality disparity between the two halves is jarring, even the average Silverstein tracks that make up its back half are solid almost across the board-only Cut and Run, with its awkward woah-oh chorus, falls mostly flat.
